Essay Questions (30pts.)

Answer One of the following in an essay which is well organized and

clearly written. Please support your argument with examples drawn from

the text(HISTORY TEXTBOOK)( Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty: An American History. 6thEdition, Vol. II) Please give me the who, what, where, and when of the question.

Length: I will require that you write at least 9- 10 paragraphs. Each

paragraph must have a minimum of 5 sentences but you certainly can go

over this amount if you desire.

1. Through much of the 19th century, the Indian populations of the West

were viewed as standing in the way of western expansion. Looking at the

period from the 1850’s to about 1900, explain how the government

attempted to deal with its “Indian problem” in the West. What specific

policies aimed to contain, remove or assimilate Indian populations in that

region and what problems did those policies encounter? How did the

Indians respond? In the end, how successful was the government effort?

2. Discuss the industrialization of the U.S. economy between 1870 and

1900. What factors promoted industrialization during that period. Which

industries and individuals played especially important roles in this

process? Explain why, how, and who.

3. Discuss the role of immigration in the industrialization and

urbanization of the U.S. during the second of the 19th Century. Who were

these immigrants and how were they different from previous groups? In

what ways were they important to the growth of industry? How did they

impact and change American cities?
