Take an opportunity to experience what an individual with physical disabilities deals with and learn how accessible (or inaccessible) the community is for someone with a physical disability. Research ADA regulations and then, using a wheelchair, maneuver through a public facility (e.g., an office building, restaurant, shopping mall, theater) to assess whether the facility is handicap accessible according to ADA requirements. Reflect on this experience and how teachers can assess their students’ ability to cope with these challenges, advocate for their basic legal rights, and determine what accommodations and modifications their students need.
