CONTEXT

You are a social care practitioner and have been requested to produce a report outlining values and practices in care in the UK today.

Social care practitioners will need to be aware of and be insightful regarding discrimination and oppression which exists in society particularly towards certain individuals and groups. It is part of social work to recognise and address these issues which can affect individuals. Therefore this assignment will both introduce you the importance of recognising human rights and the consequences of discrimination and oppression. Also a part of a social practitioner role is to present information in a clear coherent form usually in the form of a report.

ASSIGNMENT & ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Investigate the nature of human rights and summarise the main provisions (specific rights — 1.1 & 1.2) — Access the Human Rights Act 1998.

Produce a report to apply the concept of human rights to care context and understand the nature of anti-oppressive care practice. Investigate the nature and extent of oppression in the UK using relevant case studies. Critically examine the relevant legislation, rights and responsibilities including appropriate codes of professional practice in relation to care.

In order to complete your report you need to meet the following assessment criteria;

Investigate the nature and extend of oppression in the UK and the importance of anti-oppressive practice. With reference specific serious case reviews and incidences of oppression within the UK. (2.1). Use various current (less than 5 years old) sources such as journals, serious case reviews and professional text to support your investigation.

Identify which human rights were infringed and explain how these rights were exploited and the role and responsibilities of the professionals involved in the upholding the rights of the service user . (1.3) In order to do this it is important to differentiate between rights and responsibilities of the clients and care practitioners.
